Anyone who has travelled with me knows that I have always preferred the stability of bigger and heavier tripods, assuming that lightweight travel tripods just aren’t stable enough, and whilst this has proven to be the case with most travel tripods that I have tried, it certainly isn’t the case with the Sunwayfoto T3240CK carbon fibre tripod. Spoiler alert - I love this tripod! SWF2
The Sunwayfoto T3240CK Knight Series is often overlooked in favour of bigger brands, but for those who value a tripod that is compact in size, lightweight and stable, it’s a hidden gem. This is a detailed review highlighting why this tripod is a backpacker’s best friend, while acknowledging its specific niche.
The T3240CK at a glance
The T3240CK is designed as a systematic-style tripod, meaning it lacks a centre column. This design choice is exactly why it’s so stable despite its light weight. By eliminating the centre column, Sunwayfoto allows the legs to sit closer together when folded, but also enables it to get super low and close to the ground.

Features
Materials
The elaborately machined T6061 Aluminium apex is paired with 10-layer carbon fibre legs to maintain rigidity and keep the weight as low as possible.
1. The Weight-to-Strength Ratio
Using 10-layer carbon fibre isn't just marketing fluff; it significantly dampens micro-vibrations that can ruin long exposures. When hiking, every gram counts. At just 1.5kg, the T3240CK is definitely considered a lightweight tripod, especially when paired with one of Sunwayfoto’s Epic Ballheads, such as the EB-36. The T3240CK is heavy enough to feel secure with a full-frame setup and long lens, but light enough that you won’t be eyeing the nearest ravine to toss it into after a 10km hike.
2. Ergonomics and "No-Fuss" Setup
The twist locks on the Knight series are weather-sealed and require only a quarter-turn to release. When you're losing light fast at a summit, the ability to deploy all four sections in seconds is a huge advantage.
3. The Hollow Apex
The "CK" in the name refers to the CNC-machined hollow apex. This reduces weight at the tripod's "shoulders" without sacrificing structural integrity. It also includes a 1/4" mounting socket on the side — perfect for attaching a magic arm for a phone or a remote shutter.
Vented Tubes
Vent holes at the upper part of the leg tubes ensure efficient air inflow and exhaust when pulling or pushing back the leg tubes in order to extend and fold the tripod swiftly and smoothly. Quick-action twist locks, wrapped with silicone for better grip, require only 1/4 of a turn to loosen or tighten.
Weatherproofing
Sealed Twist Locks effectively prevent water, sand or dust from entering the locks and tubes, in this way extending the life and longevity of the tripod. Stable joints design effectively prevents loosening of the tripod legs from the apex due to frequent use.
When to use it
As I mentioned above, this tripod excels when keeping pack weight low is a priority, or when high winds are not a concern. I have found this tripod perfect for places like Tuscany, Normandy, Slovenia, Tenerife, the Dolomites, and the French Alps.
The Height Factor
Without a centre column, you are limited to the height of the apex, which is 140cm + the height of your ballhead. For taller photographers, this might mean a bit of hunching, but for hiking, the trade-off for a packable size is definitely worth it.
Stability
The T3240CK has exceeded my expectations in terms of stability. If you find yourself in unexpected wind, you can use the integrated weight hook under the apex to hang your camera bag. This lowers the centre of gravity and helps keep the feet pinned to the ground.
Final Verdict
The T3240CK is a great lightweight tripod, especially for locations that are not known to be windy, it’s for the photographer who prioritises portability and mechanical precision over maximum height or "heavy-tank" stability. For backcountry landscapes where you are carrying your life on your back, it is easily one of the best bangs for your buck on the market!
