Itinerary

Day 1

After meeting at Keflavik Airport, we will head North for the Snæfellsnes peninsula. We will visit some classic locations like Búðakirkja, Arnarstapi, and the Lóndrangar cliffs before finally getting to the most popular location in Iceland, Kirkjufell, where we will shoot sunset. After sunset, we will check in to our hotel and have dinner. We will keep an eye out and hope for clear skies in order for us to try to capture the Northern Lights.

Day 2

We will spend the day exploring the Snæfellsnes peninsula and capturing some of the incredible scenes that it offers. We will spend the night in the same hotel as the previous night. If we manage to capture the Northern Lights at Kirkjufell on the first night, we will then be free to try to capture them from a different location on this night.

Day 3

Today is Waterfall Day! After shooting sunrise, we will head East, covering over 250km to take us to the South Coast of Iceland. We will spend the afternoon shooting several incredible waterfalls in the area, including Gljufrabui and Seljalandsfoss at sunset. After sunset, we will drive to our hotel, which is right next to Skogafoss waterfall, one of the most photogenic waterfalls in Iceland!

Day 4

After shooting sunrise at Skogafoss waterfall, we will have breakfast and drive further East passing through the town of Vik, where we will see the famous little church on the hill and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks. We will then head North East to shoot Lómagnúpur mountain, before finally getting to Jökulsárlón Glacier lagoon in the afternoon. The drive is long but very scenic. Along the way, we will see lava fields, glaciers, waterfalls, and long stretches of black lava sands. Jökulsárlón is one of the most amazing places in Iceland, with huge amounts of photographic opportunities scattered in a relatively small area. Jökulsárlón is characterized by vivid blue icebergs that break off from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and float in the lagoon, slowly melting away until they are small enough to be carried out to sea by the tide. The journey doesn’t end here however, after being dragged out to sea, the Icebergs are then deposited on a black sandy beach called ‘the Diamond Beach’, which gives some amazing opportunities to photograph these up-close. We will shoot the sunset at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon before heading to our hotel nearby. If we get clear skies and Aurora activity, we can shoot the Northern Lights in this magical place.

Day 5

Today is Ice Cave Day! After shooting sunrise at the Diamond beach, we will meet our guide who will take us to an Ice Cave in a Super jeep. The ‘road’ to get to the ice cave is similar to driving on the moon, a desolate volcanic landscape. Our guide will provide us with all the necessary equipment to safely enter the Ice Cave (Helmet, Crampons, Ice Axe, and Harness) and will give us a quick safety briefing before we start hiking to the Ice Cave. After this once-in-a-lifetime adventure, we will head east to Stokksnes (Also known as Vestrahorn), where we will shoot sunset. Stokksnes is a peninsula with some dramatic and jagged mountains. Depending on the conditions, you can shoot some amazing sand dunes in the foreground or a mirror reflection in some tidal pools. Our Guesthouse for the night is just 20 mins from Stokksnes, meaning we will return after dinner if the Northern Lights are visible.

Day 6

After shooting sunrise at Vestrahorn, we will head further East to visit a hidden waterfall before shooting sunset at Eystrahorn. We will spend a second night in the same guesthouse giving us a further opportunity to capture the Northern Lights over Vestrahorn.

Day 7

After sunrise we will start to head West, backtracking to visit some new locations along the way. Depending on weather and time, we will stop in Skaftafell National Park, where we will visit the Svínafellsjökull glacier and the amazing Svartifoss waterfall, a 20-metre-high waterfall, surrounded by hexagonal basalt columns. After this, we will continue heading south till we get to Dyrhólaey, the famous sea arch near Vik, and spend some more time working on seascapes. We will spend the night in the town of Vik in order for us to shoot the little church, the sea stacks, and the famous Dyrhólaey Sea Arch.

Day 8

After shooting sunrise near Vik, we will head further west, we will cover some more locations that we didn’t manage on the previous days and will then visit the Golden Circle. We will then check in to our hotel before shooting sunset at Geysir, a natural geothermal steam vent. We will then return to our cabins for the night.

Day 9

After shooting the sunrise at Gullfoss waterfall, we will check out of our hotel and make our way back to Keflavik Airport. After 8 days of being on the road and seeing the best of what Iceland has to offer it will be time to head home. You can then choose to stay longer and explore some of Iceland on your own or book your flights back later that same day.

Level of fitness

There is very little walking involved in the trip – walks to locations are generally only a few hundred meters in length. Although this is a very easy tour from a physical perspective, you must have good mobility and steady feet as many locations may be icy and slippery! We will frequently be shooting on uneven ground.

What have previous attendees said about my Iceland tours:

  • What an epic week! Seven of us and our camera gear loaded in a van, led by the awesome Sam Scicluna to so many amazing sites all around the south coast of Iceland.

  • This photography tour was hosted & guided by the tireless driving force, Sam, who was both an inspiration and taskmaster who brought us sights we all could only dream about. If you are up for an adventure in Iceland or any of his other workshops – some even in warm climates, do look him up and visit his website as well. You will absolutely love it.

  • The tour ran like clockwork thanks to your drive and commitment allowing us to see much more of the wonderful Icelandic country than is available to most tourists. The timing of the visits to these iconic sites was perfect given the variable lighting and highly changeable weather. As a photographic guide, you were generous and thoughtful with your advice and direction. Advancing one’s skills, improving one’s vision, and making it to the next level. I feel I succeeded in all areas, thanks to you. Looking forward to the next workshop.

  • Thank you for such an incredible experience! You know Iceland so well and took us to the most amazing locations, some of which I’m sure even locals don’t know about! The trip was worth every penny! I would recommend it to anyone who wants to capture great images of Iceland.

  • A wonderful week with like-minded people and an incredibly knowledgeable guide who took us to so many ‘Hidden Gems’! Will definitely be joining another trip with you! Thank you for everything, Sam!
