Jagged mountain peaks, serene mountain lakes, breath taking vistas and epic dark night skies! Expect all these things and more on this incredible 8 Day / 7 Night Photography workshop in the Italian Dolomites.
The Dolomites are in North Eastern Italy, and are a photographer’s paradise with endless vistas and dramatic scenery all around. The dates of this workshop are designed to coincide with the best times to view and capture the Milkyway (No moon).
This workshop will cover some of the most amazing locations in the Dolomites. We will not have a fixed base as we will be spending each night in a different location with the aim of shooting some incredible scenes at sunrise, at sunset and if the weather permits, we will also shoot some night sky images too.
We will be spending most nights in alpine mountain huts, known as Rifugios. This means that we will be close to the locations we plan to photograph and can make the most of the conditions as they change. Everyday we will head out early to capture sunrise in a stunning new location. During the day, we will travel to our next location, have lunch, rest and use any extra time to discuss image processing, review our images and also discuss composition / light and different techniques to capture the best of any scene.
Highlights of the workshop include:
Photograph the classic Dolomite Peaks in the best light
Photograph the most famous churches in the Dolomites
Improve your composition with in the field support and feedback
Hike to some of the most incredible vantage points in the Dolomites
Capture the glistening stars and the Milkyway over the peaks
Sessions on Post processing and image assessments
Learning how to capture the best of the light
We will meet at Milan Bergamo Airport arrivals lounge. Once we have retrieved our luggage, we will head for the heart of the Dolomites, Val di Funes, where we will have lunch together and then check in to our apartment. Once we have settled into our rooms, we will have a quick briefing before we head out to photograph sunset at the classic San Giovanni church. This scene is front lit, meaning the last rays of the sun will color the mountains in the background with warm light. After sunset, we will head to San Pietro for dinner before heading back to our accommodation for an early night.
We get up early and head out to shoot sunrise at the same location as the previous night, this time the scene will be backlit, so if we get a good sky, we will have epic color in the scene! After getting the best of the light, we will return to our hotel to have breakfast and relax a bit before heading into the next valley and getting the cable car upto the famous Seceda ridge line. After a quick hike to the rifugio, we will have lunch, check in to our rooms and rest before having a quick session to review the photos from the previous shoots. We will then get the ski lift up to the Seceda Ridge. We will shoot sunset here and then begin the moderate hike back to the rifugio. After dinner and a drink we will get some well-deserved rest.
We get up early once again and head back to the Seceda Ridge to shoot sunrise. The sun will rise behind the peaks, so we will once again hope for some nice color in the sky. We will then hike back down to the rifugio for breakfast, pack our bags and catch the cable car back down to the town, where we will head to another great location, the famous mountain pass called Passo Falzarego. We will take the cable car up to Rifugio Lagazuoi where we will check in to our room at the rifugio and rest in the afternoon before heading out for sunset. There are several different options for compositions here, as we will be based at one of the highest rifugios in the Dolomites and will have a great view of different mountains around us. After sunset, we will attempt to shoot some astrophotography before heading to bed.
After sunrise and breakfast, we will head down to Cortina D’Ampezzo, one of the biggest towns in the area. We then begin our trip up the long winding road towards the most epic mountains in the Dolomites, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. We will spend the next 3 days navigating around these imposing peaks, staying at a different Rifugio each night, which will give us the opportunity to capture this amazing location. Our first night will be spent on the South Side of Tre Cime, with some amazing mountain views all around us. After checking in and having lunch, we will head out for sunset and shoot the Cadini peaks nearby. If the sky is clear, we will wait for it to get dark before shooting the Milkyway above the Cadini, an absolutely incredible experience!
After shooting sunrise at the Cadini and having breakfast back at the Rifugio, we will hike for about 45 minutes to our next Rifugio, here we will be to the East of the Tre Cime, and we will be close to the saddle, our sunset location for the day. We will take it easy and can explore the surroundings before checking in, having lunch and resting in the early afternoon. For sunset we will head upto the Saddle, which is about 25-30 minute hike, from here we will have the Tre Cime backlit, with the sun setting behind the peaks. The saddle itself creates a fantastic leading line into the Tre Cime and if its clear, we will be able to shoot a panorama of the Milkyway and Tre Cime together.
After shooting sunrise from the saddle and having breakfast, we will pack our bags and begin the 1 hour hike to the next hut, for undoubtedly the most famous view of the Tre Cime. We will spend our last night here, at the incredible Rifugio Locatelli. This is truly the ultimate view of the Tre Cime, and there is also the impressive Monte Paterno and the awesome little Laghi del Piani, 2 lakes which if there is no wind, give perfect mirror reflections. After lunch and a rest, we will head out to shoot sunset and the night sky. This location is probably the highlight of the whole trip, and perfectly epitomizes the Dolomites in all their glory.
After shooting sunrise at Tre Cime for the last time we will have breakfast and pack our bags. We then have an hour and a half hike back to the car. We drive back through Cortina D’Ampezzo and keep heading south to Passo Rolle, our last location. We will then have lunch and check in to our hotel. Our sunset shoot will be at the epic Baita Segantini, where there is a gorgeous lake a rifugio, dwarfed by towering peaks. After shooting sunset we will head for our final dinner together before returning to our hotel for a good nights sleep.
We wake up to shoot the last sunrise of our mountain adventure at Baita Segantini before returning to our hotel for breakfast. After this, we will pack our bags and begin the long trip back to Bergamo airport.

Travel Insurance: It is highly recommend that you purchase travel insurance for your workshop and travel expenses. I suggest a plan which offers coverage for medical and dental emergencies, lost baggage and trip cancellation should you have a medical problem that prevents you from attending.
